Eland and Friends

About

Early one morning at Leopard Gorge, the sky was grey and dull, so from our position down in the middle of the gorge, we took the opportunity to photograph wildlife in silhouette as it stood up on the cliffs.

This is a common eland, one of Africa's largest largest plains game, and the second largest type of antelope in the world.

Here, this male, who sports a damaged antler -- probably the result of a dispute with another male eland -- stands high on the south-western edge of Leopard Gorge, joined by three oxpeckers.
